Honouring Recovery at Government House

On July 12, 2024, Oxford House received a truly remarkable invitation: to join the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta for a special luncheon at Government House. This invitation extended to our pre-treatment residents, marking a significant moment in their recovery journeys. For these individuals, fresh from detox and embarking on the challenging path to recovery, this day would become a cherished memory, a beacon of hope and encouragement.

The excitement was palpable as our residents, alumni and staff from Calgary and Edmonton prepared for this prestigious event. They took care to dress in their finest attire, embodying respect and gratitude for the opportunity. Stepping onto the grounds of Government House, they were greeted by its majestic architecture, a testament to Alberta's rich history and cultural heritage. The grandeur of the building inspired awe, setting the stage for a day that promised to be unforgettable.

Inside, the warmth of the welcome from Government House staff reaffirmed the significance of the occasion. The dining room, elegantly set for the occasion, featured reserved tables for distinguished guests including the Lieutenant Governor and other honoured attendees. Among them were Earl Thiessen, Linda McCollum (Chair of the Oxford House Board), and her husband, Bruce McCollum, and Stephanie Crofts, Program Coordinator at Oxford House. The rest of the guests, including our residents, were free to choose their seats, each place setting adorned with dishes bearing Alberta's emblem.

The luncheon unfolded with a blend of formalities and heartfelt moments. Residents had the unique privilege of engaging with the Aide-de-Camp and the emcee, gaining insights into their roles and responsibilities within Government House. This interaction not only enriched their experience but also deepened their appreciation for the people who support such meaningful gatherings.

The highlight of the event came during the official remarks. The Lieutenant Governor, Her Honour Salma Lakhani, spoke with compassion about the struggles faced by those battling addiction, acknowledging the crucial role of Oxford House in providing essential support before and after treatment.
